Pixel Art
Pixel Art is normally seen in 2D games, comprised of 2D sprites to create a character or object. An example of a game that consists of pixels would be super Mario, back when it was 2D.

As you can see in this GIF the two versions of 2D Mario both contain pixels, as you can see by the square shapes on the image. Pixels aren't just squares, however it is one of the most common ways of identifying a pixel.

As you can see Pixels do restrict a game to being 2D as they are flat and do not allow for 3D graphics, also looking unrealistic it is not so ideal for a game that is aiming to be photo realistic.
On the left of this GIF you can see the very first version of Mario, which is restricted to few colours that do not look detailed at all, however the right version is a remake which has added colours which allow to define a character much more, as you can notice in the female character who looks very basic in the left and much more detailed in the right.

Concept Art

Concept Art refers to a character, weapon or the general environment in which a game takes place.

Digital Graphics

Raster images: These are in the form of BMP, GIF, TIFF, JPEG.

JPEG - JPEG is a form of lossy compression, and is a file type that is used primarily for images with colour. With a JPEG the file size is normally smaller at the price of some image quality loss.

TIFF - TIFF files are larger than JPEG files, however they do not lose any quality as the files are not compressed like JPEG files, and TIFF files normally have a much better quality than other file types.

GIF - A GIF is usually an animated moving image, as you can see in this image below. GIF's do support static images as well, and are a form of lossless compression as they do not lose any image quality.


Vector Images
Vector images uses lines, curves or polygons in their images. This type of image is saved primarily in PSD, WMF, FIA, AI.
PSD - A PSD file is a layered image file format that consists of layers. Normally this file type is from a Photoshop file, so that the layers can individually be edited even if the file has been saved. http://whatis.techtarget.com/fileformat/PSD-Adobe-Photoshop-default


WMF - Stands for windows metafile, this is a file extension for files saved in windows. Orginally this file type was made for windows 1990, however it has since been adapted to support current file types.

compression
this is a term that is used when you get a file and squash it into a file of a smaller size for example the file format jpg compresses a image into one that's the same but less quality this is a good way to save memory for other data.

file extentions
this is a specified as a suffix to the name by syntax by either a dot or space that idicates the format for the computer file here are a few examples (.png , .jpeg , .exe , .dmg , and .txt)

image capture
to capture an image you can use one of the following scanner tablet/phone or a digital camera you can find the best by looking how many mega pixels it has also.


optomising
this is a term that can mean improving you creation and but to do that you need to know what these following are:

target image output-the way you want it to be
bit depth-this is so your image can be a small size to take up less memory a good one would be 8 or 16 bit.
resolution - this can also help save memory with the file but you can loose picture quality of your image it is also important if you want to capture a image of high qulity you  will need a good enough device to do so.
dimentions- the dimensions is good to no when your saving as if its 2d you can save to psd/jpeg but 3d would have to be pla.

storage of image assets

this is things that you can store on but you will need to know what to save it as and know what to call the file. for example i wold save this picture as
a jpeg because is an image and it being compressed will save memory.










This is a picture that is with very high detail that makes it look real when it really isn’t. These are used in game with high resolution which are game on consoles such as Xbox / PlayStation for these you will need a computer that is high spec for the detail and realism.
game brief 
a brief is a set of instructions given in a job to create or achieve something these are usually quite basic but you will have to add mare to complete it. This may consist of a client brief (which is given by someone else)a own brief (which is one you made) and market research to have something to base your brief on.

ideas generation

brainstorming- is jotting down everything there is to do with a subject to help with your ideas in your game 
mood boards - is similar to brainstorming but more picture based this could consist of textures or patterns you could use
thumbnail sketching- is a way so make characters and weapons for your games sprites
concept drawings- producing ideas of various game part for example backgrounds vehicles and   characters 

legal an ethical considerations
copyright law - this is a law that was made to stop people using other peoples ideas in there own creation if you brake the law you can loose alot of money "Copyright law originated in the United Kingdom from a concept of common law; the Statute of Anne 1709. It became statutory with the passing of the Copyright Act 1911. The current act is the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988." .
libel - a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation.
representation of females in games - women are mainly sexulised in computer games.

interlectual property is stuff created from the mids such as artist work and designs.

assignment 1 for unit 78 : graphics for computer games


Super Mario is an old 2D game that uses a lot of basic art styles like pixel which is mostly use one out of all of them as the sprite and backgrounds are mainly using pixel. The Mario sprite is small and uses pixel as it’s a basic 2d sprite which is made up of 3 main colours red blue and bage. The sprite its self would probably have been saved as a jpeg as the file is a vector image and is not that big because is not that detailed and isn’t that high quality. As it is such a small file it would not need to be compressed.

The back ground of the game is slightly more detailed than the sprite but not by much the clouds and pipe have a little 3d shading for effect. The background would have been a jpeg to as is basic and not really detailed .
The texture art in all of the game is very small as the bricks are basic but the game has mostly has no texture.
The sounds of the game are very basic and have a catchy beat also there is a different sound for different things for example when you hit the block for a coin it makes a bash noise and when you pick the coin up it makes a ting sort of noise.
The game was an 8 bit because of low resolution and it wouldn’t have been compressed because the file would have already been small and the game would have been the maximum of around 2 GB and it was originally played on the retro Nintendo game consoles.
Super Mario is a old game and there are many versions of the game the newer versions are not pixelated and are more detailed.


3D GAME: BATTLEFIELD 4
Battlefield 4 is a 3d game that has used a lot of artistic styles and game graphics. The characters in battlefield are extremely photo realistic and was clearly compressed so this was saved as a tiff the amount of photorealism with the face and the gear like the guns that were used look like replicas of the real life models. The effects of the gun firing are quite detailed as they make little flash animations. There is also a blood splatter effect that appears when you’re shooting an enemy. Also there are expoltion anamations when your rocket/granade has blew up it looks quite good and real also.

The game is a 64 bit game because of the games high resalution and all of the different effects would have been in a separate file also the games 3d decorations of the buildings look quite photo realistic as the texures of the walls and floor bring out the resulution of the buildings. The tarrian is mainly grass and stone and water the water effects are quite real with the water animations of the waves and beaches.

The grass and sand is quite realistic and it can also be destroyed with the bombs. The trees and bushes have a wind effect which is also qutie realistic as they sway in the wind direction. Also the flash and smoke from the granades look quite realistic as the flash sends the screen white and then has a 2 second delay till it regens to normal.
The hole game overall is compressed to make the file smaller as the amount of detail that the game consists of and would make it extremly large in file size
The sounds and music used in battlefield are more complexed as there are sounds for every thing that’s in the game even the animations. The explotions make a collision noise so you know that its happened.
The texure on battle field is realistic and there is a lot more texture used in the photo realistic game.

comparison
These two games have a main character but one is more evolved into the new generation tech than the other the 2d game in easy and basic to make however the 3d is a detail tarrain with the trees and grass animations and a lot of effects.
Both of the games are based at a different quality but the both inclued a main character and background+foreground.
The difference between the two is the 8 bit game is a small fille with not much quality but the 64 bit is a big file because of reslution and quality but if you wanted a game like this on a mobile or tablet it would have to be compressed there for it would loose abit of quality.
The 8 bit game would have been played on a old retro console like game boy or old nintendo as super mario is a really old video game however the 64 bit game would have been put on a console of way more better graphics prosessor as it needs one strong enough to handle the graphics of the game this game was relesed on the xbox 360 and the playstation 3 but for those consoles the file was compressed and it lost a bit of quality. It was then realesed on the xbox one and playstation 4 which has a better graphic prosesor and didn’t need compressing.
The most obvious differents between the two is the 8 bit game is pixelated but the 64 bit was photo realistic.
The biggest difference between the two games is the time scale. For these games to be made they had to be set a time limit but the 8 bit game would have been less than the 64 bit because the 8 bit was pixelated and requied hardly any detail on the sprites and background but the 64 bit game is realy photo realistic therefore the game would of taken a couple of years to make to perfect the detail on the characters and game props used. Also as the storage size is bigger for battle field 4 shows the difference on the timescale it took to make.
The two game both involve sound but there is a big difference on the types and styles of the sounds used. The 8 bit game consists of a few different sounds but the 64 bit game has more complexed sounds used and a lot more to the reason for this is the 64 bit game would have a sound for every thing from nature to animations.

the textures used in both of the games are completely different because of the file size the 64 bit is more detailed and has more textures but this is because the game has had more hardware to create the 8 bit game is old there fore had hardly any hardware but still has a good use of texture in the 8 bit game.
